First contact with an alien culture that ends in complete horror and disaster. The protagonist, Emilio Sandoz, has his Jesuit faith severely tested.
Overall good book, but the characters didn't impress me as much as I would have liked (and some of them were downright annoying). The more a reader can identify with the main characters, the better for it, but Russell is unable to achieve this with me. Also, the book is much longer than it should be, with the first 200 pages or so serving no real purpose in the context of the themes presented.
Deserves consideration given the major religious points, but could have been presented better.
