I really like Bacigalupi's writing style. It's simple, expressive, clever.
This one has a great premise, although I was familiar with it, through a short story of his, based on the same idea.
The fear was tangible and the world was unforgiving. The story was compelling enough to keep me reading. That said, I couldn't relate to any of the main characters, with the exception of Maria. Angel refused to stay in character for more than a chapter and Lucy was too self-righteous to feel real.
A worthy read nevertheless, with plenty of scary, but interesting, ideas.
