Camm and Cal have been best friends forever. The summer of their senior year finds them trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Cal's younger brother on Halloween night many years ago. They believe his disappearance centers around the creepy old mansion in their small, remote California town.

The creepy old house is haunted by a mutant dog-like creature that eats children and is banished to a painting during the day. The chemical industry is once again portrayed in a negative light. As an R&D chemist who has worked for some of the largest chemical companies, I find the purposeful polluter -cover-up at all costs scenarios unrealistic.

This book is considered a Young Adult novel. I think the age group that would like this book is lower than that usually considered Young Adult. And, as someone who didn't read a lot of Young Adult books (that classification didn't really exist when I was young), I think I may have liked it had I read it when I was eight or nine, but probably not as a teen.
