The Bloody Nine is headed home. War rages across the North, and it's time he settled a score with the King. Angland finds itself faced with a war on two fronts, as the Gurkish now march from the south, in addition to the war against the Northmen. After having to abandon the city of Dagoska to the Gurkish, Glokta returns to Angland to find himself subducted in politics as men do what men do best during war: capitalize. As the King of the Union lies on his deathbed, Angland slides towards anarchy as peasants revolt and nobles fight for the crown, and Jezal dan Luthar suddenly finds himself thoroughly ensnared in a web that Bayaz has woven. But all these are they petty matters of petty men, and there is much, much more at stake than lands and crowns......
