Twenty five years on from the events of The Tombs of Atuan. Tenar is a farmer's widow with two grown children. She adopts a girl, Therru, who has raped and burned by her own family. When she travels to Re Albi to visit the deathbed of Ogion she and her ward cross the dark path of the wizard of Re Albi. Ged returns stripped of his maigical powers and he and Tenar must fight to save Therru, and discover their life together.
At the time criticized as a feminist re-write of The Earthsea trilogy it is nothing of the sort. A highly satisfying and mature development of the lives of Ged and Tenar with the magic arising from the domesticity of ordinary life.
