I read The Giver based on recommendations. It wasn't a bad read but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I read it in a couple of sittings.
It's a good story set in a futuristic utopian/dystopian community and it certainly holds one's interest. It never bogs down and leads inexorably to its climax, with a couple of small twists. The ending resolved the tension, but somehow seemed a little inadequate. Nevertheless, not a bad little book.
The simple prose style is aimed at a younger readership. The Giver won some children's book awards. I will say that I enjoyed it considerably more than another children's book I read recently, A Wrinkle in Time.
