This was one of the first books I ever read that convincingly took one into an alternate universe - and did it convincingly enough, and was well written enough, that it remains one of my favourites. Steam engines and semaphore towers in the 1970s; England still locked in the vice grip of the Catholic church; nobles and rebellion and very, very good writing. Keith Roberts was a master.
