I haven't seen the movie version of The Neverending Story in many years, but as a child I nearly wore out our VHS tape. I loved it so much that when I saw that a waitress at our local 24 hour diner had tattoos on the back of her arms of the Southern Oracle I was terrifically impressed (and jealous) and thought about getting my own Neverending Story themed tattoo. After having read the book, I will keep my love of the movie in my heart rather than on my skin.
The book felt hollow like one of Xayide's metal soldiers, it moves solely at the will of the author instead of having some internal mechanisms (character, plot, setting, etc). It is a beautifully painted shell of a story, but I am too used to stories filled with substance to do more than smile politely at this book.
