p 391:

"We'd been treading water... waiting for something to happen, because something always happened when we got too comfortable."

This quote centers my confusion about the Newsflesh books. Is this series an attempt at post-modern self-awareness of the tropes of serial horror? If so, why do the heroes not seem to know that, despite their Romero references? And if so, where is the intriguing or clever spin on our expectations, to keep me reading?

Meanwhile, the same abrasive characters lurch along the rails (or in this case, frontage roads) of the plot, without even bothering to have villains this time around. There's a conspiracy, but no people in that conspiracy. Maybe the real villain is the pages of introspection.
