A curious story of the far future where humanity is cowering in fear of retributive invasion from a far away race who was abused and demeaned by the people of earth. The main character is tasked with watching for the believed inevitable invasion, and he wanders around making friends and fellow travelers until the inevitable happens.
Rather than list the specific events of the story and spoil it for new readers, suffice to say that the crisis arrives, the friends turn out to be other than they seem, and in the end hope arises again.
So much just "happens' without clear compelling reason, both bad and good, that it feels like the author just wanted to get the job done and sold. That said, it pushes a lot of the popular buttons for readers of that time, but current readers may likely find it wanting on several levels.
