A story that delves deepiy into the motivations of thsoe who would use the parts of others to ensure their own survival. The work focuses on the psychological, metaphysical and sexual attitudes and behaviors of a group of scientists and surgeons who use 'damaged' humans as spare parts for other humans. The idea of genetic and physical superiority are explored, as well as psychological dysfunction and repair.
The protagonist is essentially dragged to the secret site to help further the experiments in brain transplants. The author examines how he copes with the strain on his own conscience, and the impacts his work has on his actual patients, as well as co-workers. All leads to a violent and surprise ending.
A very nice work overlooked in its time.
