The strangest part of this novel is the author's view of people of the sixth century, that is to say, childlike, and quick to believe any egregious lie.
Our understanding now is that people of the past were just as clever as modern man, but without the technology and industry. It's not clear whether this view of by-gone England is satire, or if Twain really believed that people of that time were so sophomoric, even imbicilic.
