This is a competent and enjoyable but utterly unremarkable paranormal fantasy about an attempt to invoke an Egyptian-mythology-based world spirit which will subsume all human beings. While the first in the series, Alternate Routes, certainly had an appearance by the author's Catholic beliefs, in this novel they are on full-force, Technicolor display. Fans of the first may enjoy this one, too, as may people who are deeply-familiar with Los Angeles and its environs, but those who prefer their SFF to be free of excessive religiosity may wish to give it a pass.
