This year for the "I just have to read more of that author" challenge I am taking on a number of Stephen King books that I never got around to reading. To start the challenge I began with the Stoker winner from 1987, Misery. I had never read this novel primarily because I had already seen the film. Like most adaptations the original novel was superior. It definitely seemed as if King had set about to make a novel of how he would feel if his own personal nightmares as a novelist came true. The novel was much more vivid and gruesome than the film. It caught me off guard at times with its brutality, yet I always wanted to press on to see how tha main character, Paul Sheldon, came through the experience with his number one fan. I can see why this was a Stoker winner and I enjoyed the novel a great deal. I would give it 4 and. quarter stars if the rating was available. The novel Finders Keepers had allusions to this novel that I had missed until the reading of Misery. Definitely worth the time even if you have already seen the film.
