I've had this book on my shelf for years, somewhat intimidated by all its awards, expecting something thoughtful and philosophical, like The Dispossessed. I finally took it up in my quest to read all the books that won both the Hugo and Nebula. I should have known that it would not be like that, knowing Haldeman's style. Philosophical ideas were in the background as a driving force, but they were brought across not by talk, but by action. While I didn't like it as much as The Forever War (not that it's even a great comparison), but it was excellent and much better than Camouflage, another of his award-winning books. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who like military/action sci-fi with solid ideas behind it.
