Synopsis
This novelette originally appeared in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, December 1984. It can also be found in the anthologies The Year's Best Science Fiction: Second Annual Collection (1985), edited by Gardner Dozois, Christmas Stars (1992), edited by David G.
