Random quote: "Listen, my dear Cors, why don't you forgive God for allowing pain? If He didn't allow it, human courage, bravery, nobility, and self-sacrifice would all be meaningless things." - Walter M. Miller, Jr. (A Canticle for Leibowitz)

Fantasy and science fiction literature - especially sword & sorcery, planetary romance, and weird fiction - had a large influence on early roleplaying games, especially the granddaddy of them all, Dungeons & Dragons. Some of the earlier books included recommended reading lists, whose influences are still debated today (sometimes quite vociferously). My renewed interest in fantasy and science-fiction literature came about after reviewing Gary Gygax's Appendix N in the 1st edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide last year. I thought that the Appendix N list, as well as Tom Moldvay's list from the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules, and Appendix 3 of the more recent Pathfinder Gamemastery Guide would be of interest to other posters on this board. Here are the lists, which intermix general author recommendations, as well as specific series and books:

Appendix N (1e AD&D DMG - 1979)

Anderson, Poul. Three Hearts and Three Lions; The High Crusade; The Broken Sword

Bellairs, John. The Face in the Frost

Brackett, Leigh.

Brown, Fredric.

Burroughs, Edgar Rice, Pellucidar series; Mars series; Venus series

Carter, Lin. "World's End" series

de Camp, L. Sprague. Lest Darkness Fall; Fallible Fiend; et al.

de Camp & Pratt. "Harold Shea" series; Carnelian Cube

Derleth, August.

Dunsany, Lord.

Farmer, P. J. "The World of the Tiers" series; et al.

Fox, Gardner. "Kothar" series; "Kyrik" series; et al.

Howard, R. E. "Conan" series

Lanier, Sterling. Hiero’s Journey

Leiber, Fritz. "Fafhrd & Gray Mouser" series; et al.

Lovecraft, H. P.

Merritt, A. Creep, Shadow, Creep; Moon Pool; Dwellers in the Mirage; et al.

Moorcock, Michael. Stormbringer; Stealer of Souls; "Hawkmoon" series (esp. the first three books)

Norton, Andre.

Offutt, Andrew J., editor. Swords Against Darkness III.

Pratt, Fletcher. Blue Star; et al.

St. Clair, Margaret. The Shadow People; Sign of the Labrys

There are also a bunch of games based directly on books eg:

and there are also a bunch of books based directly on games eg:

Add comics and video games and even the NSA will find it hard to map all the cross pollination between these.
